We are delighted to be welcoming a wide range of exciting speakers to this year’s Academic Conference at Downe House, which is now a firm and popular fixture in the educational calendar.
One important focus of this year’s event is why fewer young people are choosing to study English Literature at A level and at university, and what we can do about this.
We are delighted that distinguished teacher, writer and curator Rebecca de Pelet will be speaking on this topic at our Conference.
Rebecca says: “We are beginning to make sense of our relationship with AI and simultaneously, employers are clamouring for young people who can communicate effectively, think critically, show empathy and understand human behaviour. We are losing what we need the most just at that moment when so-called soft skills are emerging as the new hard skills.”
Join Rebecca de Pelet in thinking about how we can reconnect who we are with what we need, in the education of young people.
We are also delighted to welcome Rob Castell (Director of Performing Arts at Downe House) and Rebecca Preston (Head of Drama at Kennet School, Thatcham) as speakers.
They will argue that what young people need now, more than ever, is the ability to communicate effectively, collaborate with confidence, and approach problem-solving with creativity.
Rob and Rebecca will discuss why the Performing Arts need to be reframed as a vital element of education that equips students with the qualities employers demand in today’s rapidly changing workplace.
You will be invited to reconsider the role of Performing Arts in your school and explore how to articulate their true value to students and parents alike.
Whether you are a school leader, classroom teacher, governor, or simply someone passionate about the future of education, this is an event not to be missed. Come and join us as we reflect on what should be preserved, what must evolve, and how we can work together to shape the schools of tomorrow.
We look forward to welcoming you on 17 June. Don’t miss out: book your place now!
