Business

As business is a major part of life, the value of studying it at A Level is immeasurable, enabling girls to develop essential skills and knowledge for many university courses and future employment.

Head of Department: Mr Michael Liggins

Business is a subject offered to girls in the Sixth Form at Downe House. The course offers a stimulating and interesting overview of the importance of business to the UK economy and beyond.

We follow the Edexcel Business 9BSO specification, which considers the changes to the business landscape in recent years. The new specification has a greater focus on digital technology and e-commerce, international business, globalisation and business ethics. All theory will be supported with relevant examples and the students are expected to take an interest in business news.

In the first year, the girls will look at the different types of businesses, differences between managers and leaders and decision-making to improve marketing, operational performance, human resources and financial performance. In the second year they will focus on strategies to improve the position and direction of a business.

The Department is well-resourced; all girls have access to a wide variety of textbooks, magazines and digital material to support their studies. Involvement in Young Enterprise, visits from outside speakers, attending conferences and other business-related activities form a key part of the course.

Full details of the curriculum are available in the Sixth Form options publication. Further information about the teaching and learning of Business may be obtained by contacting the Head of Business and Economics, Mr Michael Liggins.
