Bread & Beyond…

Sourcing food locally is a high priority for the Catering Department at Downe House and when the invitation came to support neighbouring Prior’s Court School at the same time, Catering Manager, Mrs Sarah Dyson jumped at the opportunity.

Bread & Beyond is a purpose-built bakery at Prior’s Court School in the village of Chieveley which has been developed to provide training and work opportunities for young people with severe autism, whilst at the same time producing a delicious range of handcrafted breads and cakes using the highest quality ingredients. Baking is an activity which really suits the strength and skills of people with autism; highly process driven, practical and with an end product which is rewarding and motivating.

Catering and Events Manager, Mrs Sarah Dyson said, “We are committed to working with local businesses wherever possible and are delighted that through placing a regular bread order with Bread & Beyond, we are able to support this very worthwhile venture at Prior’s Court School. The fact that the bread is such high quality and is freshly baked just three miles down the road at a neighbouring school makes this a mutually rewarding arrangement.”

Downe House has placed an order for a variety of freshly baked rolls, loaves and speciality breads which amounts to 80% of weekly consumption by girls and staff. The Catering Department caters for over 1000 people at lunchtime and 700 for breakfast and supper 7 days a week during term time as well as conjuring up delicious three course dinners for special occasions throughout the year.
