Spectacular Day of Discovery

The biennial Day of Discovery brought together the whole community to share their knowledge, opinions, thoughts and skills in an astonishing range of disciplines.

27 March 2019

Just for one day, the timetable was suspended and girls in Upper School and Sixth Form could choose four sessions from over 70 sessions on offer from staff, parents, alumnae and external speakers ranging from ‘The AI and Tech Revolution’, ‘Do you want to be a make-up artist’ by Trinny Woodall and ‘Chemical Curiosities’ to Greek traditional dancing, ‘Life as a Midwife’ and website coding. At the same time, Lower School girls had their own Day of Discovery trip to Portsmouth where they enjoyed visiting the Mary Rose Museum and exploring the Historic Dockyards.

The Day of Discovery concluded with an ‘Any Questions?’ session attended by all the girls and staff with a panel of experts including Pernilla Holland, Eric Bidinger, Francisca Sconce, Jo Walker, Amy Davies, Elena Sinel, Rosie Tapner and Trinny Woodall. Questions included, ‘if Brexit was a movie, what would the title be?’, ‘What are your tips for finding a job?’ and ‘What lies behind the reluctance to include minorities in film and literature?’. It was a highly entertaining and thought-provoking session enjoyed by all.

Assistant Headmistress (Foundation), Mrs Michelle Scott said, “This year’s Day of Discovery has really showcased the incredible scope of talents of our staff, parents and alumnae and there can be nothing more inspirational for our girls than sharing the experiences of those within their own community. I would like to thank everyone who has given so willingly of their time and expertise and for their contribution to making our Day of Discovery such a success. In particular, my thanks go to all the ‘Any Questions?’ panelists for their insightful observations and very well-expressed views in response to the girls’ questions.”

The event was organised by the Foundation Office in conjunction with the DH LINKS team which offers networking links and a focal point for any current pupils or alumnae who want to share or receive careers-based knowledge, guidance and information.
