The Modern Foreign Languages Department has had an exciting and culture-filled start to the term, with activities that bring together students across year groups to celebrate language, film, and food.
In MFL Film Club, we recently watched the award-winning French film Intouchables. With popcorn and snacks in hand, students gathered in Willis for an evening of cinema, conversation, and laughter. The club runs four times a term and offers a wonderful opportunity for pupils from different year groups to connect over their shared passion for languages and culture.
As Anna B (UVI/Year 13) explained:
It helps integrate year groups and connect people with similar passions. We want to continue this to build a cultural portfolio for A Level students so they can understand their subject better and also enjoy it.
The Film Club rotates between different languages each time, and we’re already looking forward to our next session, which will feature an Italian film.
Meanwhile, the MFL Society also had plenty of fun this week, celebrating all things French with a crêpe-making session! Students learnt French vocabulary related to cooking, sang a lively French song, and of course, enjoyed eating their delicious creations.
Each week, the Society explores a new language or cultural theme—whether through games, music, food, or quizzes. Making it a fantastic space for students from Remove up to Upper Fourth to experience languages in a relaxed and enjoyable way.
We are also delighted to welcome our new Language Ambassadors:
Cymbeline A, Alice B, Ottavia O, Olivia F, Lucie MDC, Daphney P, and Florence W.
They will play a key role in promoting the love of languages across the school and helping to lead future events.
The best way to find out more about Downe House is to experience it for yourself. Book a personal tour or join us at one of our Open Mornings, available throughout the year.
