Happy Day 2026 was a joyful celebration of creativity, leadership and school spirit. Organised by the Upper Sixth Seniors, the day provided a “last hurrah” before A Level revision and brought the whole Downe House community together in colourful and energetic style.

This year’s theme was books, with each year group exploring its own literary genre: Lower Sixth were Myths and Legends, Lower Fifth embraced Anime, Upper Sixth took on Fantasy, and others represented Roald Dahl or David Walliams. Staff were transformed into literary villains, including Mrs Mortimer as Hannibal Lecter and Beth Mears Smith as Lord Farquaad, with plenty of Death Eaters in the mix.

Activities ran throughout the day, from a flash-mob and themed lunch to the much-loved Pie the Teacher tradition, including a special pie for Headmistress Mrs McKendrick. In the evening, a reading of Shakespeare’s Othello by Mrs McKendrick, assisted by Mr Godfrey, led into a surprise whole-school disco, DJed by Miss Setterington, bringing everyone together to dance and celebrate.

Students reflected on the excitement and camaraderie of the day. Hitomi (LVI/Year 12) said,

It was incredible to see everyone come together, rely on each other and create such an amazing atmosphere. I left feeling exhausted but completely fulfilled.” Ines (LV/Year 10) added, “It was chaotic, fun and unforgettable, with amazing costumes, sweets from the Upper Sixth, and so many exciting activities.

The event was a perfect showcase of leadership, creativity and community. Head Senior Hettie (UVI/Year 13), Deputy Head Senior Rose (UVI/Year 13), and the Upper Sixth team ensured the day ran smoothly and inspired the younger students with their energy and organisation.

Happy Day 2026 was a brilliant end to the Lent term, celebrating imagination, teamwork and the joy of being part of the Downe House community.
