Global Schools Exchange to Durban – Alice’s Story

Alice, formerly of the Lower Fifth/Year 10 (now Upper Fifth/Year 11), visited Durban, South Africa, as part of the Downe House Global Schools Exchange Programme. She had a fantastic experience, from a safari trip with her host family, to a bush camp with other exchange students, and the chance to make a friend for life in her exchange buddy.

Alice also took part in volunteering as part of the school-led programme, an experience that was truly eye-opening. She writes:

“I wonder if you’ve ever questioned what happened to that shoebox you filled one time at Christmas, many, many years ago. The one with the toothbrush, comb, bright pencils, and the sticker book – any child’s dream. You’d probably forgotten about the box by the time January slumped around and it was given into your form teacher at school. I’ll admit it – that child was me.

And yet it wasn’t until I was standing 6,000 miles away from that exact classroom, in South Africa, and yes, in another classroom, but this time filled with the most content children you’ve ever seen. While they were underprivileged 4-year-olds, it was the sight of their faces that filled me with bliss. Those whose faces lit up at the sight of a box that once contained your new school shoes, now replaced with objects only a fraction of the price.

Whilst being on my exchange, I was lucky enough to be present at several eye-opening experiences, but this is the one that stands out. I cannot explain the rush of joy that passed through me while watching these children in awe. The way their eyes popped, and their hands clapped together.

It was the full-circle moment that did it for me. At 8 years old, I’d briefly pondered about where those shoeboxes may one day end up, however it wasn’t until numerous years later that I ended up in that ‘mystery place’, standing in a small rural primary school in Africa, watching similar boxes – likely packed by children from Canada or Argentina – being handed out. I believe it is these moments that make exchanges so valuable. Simply because no ordinary person will ever get to witness that priceless moment. But that is what makes it so special.”

Alice’s experience shows how life-enriching and engaging the Global Schools Exchange Programme is, offering students cultural immersion, meaningful volunteering, and friendships that last a lifetime.
