AGS raised £8000 for Hope Asia

5 December 2018

AGS hosted a Charity Fundraising Gala in aid of their international link charity, Hope Asia and raised over £8,000 which will be donated to the charity’s Myanmar Project. This Project aims to build a network of boarding houses in remote regions of Myanmar where children can stay during term time and access the local education provision, while still being connected to their families and local culture.

AGS girls, Daisy and Lulu reported on the event, “The event was planned to raise funds to support Hope Asia and the amazing work the charity does to provide disadvantaged children in Myanmar with an education and a home. Everyone was asked to wear an article of clothing in the colours of the Myanmar flag which created a very colourful sight and a good atmosphere. AGS girls made the most delicious canapés which they served to the guests before the wonderful two-course dinner made by the Catering staff – we should mention that the chocolate dessert was delightful! After dinner, AGS girls entertained the guests with an engaging programme of disco bingo, a quiz, musical performances and some entertaining reports on House Clubs. A huge amount of money was raised through the Silent Auction which featured a seven-course tasting menu and a holiday in Ireland amongst many other lots on offer to the higher bidder. For us the most exciting part of the evening was the raffle in which many goodies were donated and won. Overall the evening was a complete success and, thanks to Mrs McClymont and her team of Sixth Formers who created an incredibly entertaining night, everyone had a good time!”

Including the funds raised at this event, AGS have now raised in excess of £23,000 for Hope Asia supporting the Hosanna Children’s Home which has been used to build dormitories and a new educational wing as well as a generator to ensure that the Home has a more reliable power source. Following the successful trip to visit the Home in 2016, AGS Housemistress, Mrs Sofia McClymont will be leading another trip to Myanmar in Summer 2019 during which they will be living with, caring for and teaching the children at the Home and seeing exactly how the funds they have raised have been used.

Mrs McClymont said, “The AGS @Home event was a huge success and I am immensely grateful to have such a wonderful group of girls in my House and equally, wonderful and supportive parents, as the evening would not have been as successful without both. Thanks most certainly go to our AGS Seniors, Katie, Davina and Imogen for all their help. We are very much looking forward to our trip to Myanmar and feel that these fundraising initiatives will enable everyone, not just those going on the trip, to connect with the Home, and feel they have played a part in changing the lives of those very special children.”
