Miss Farr (Headmistress) was determined that the emphasis on science should be increased and appointed additional staff and launched a fresh appeal to build more laboratories. The new Science School was opened by Lady Plowden in 1990 and since then the science department has played a major role in school life. The Science Society for older girls started to invite eminent scientists to speak on a wide variety of scientific disciplines, together with a more practical Science Club for younger girls. The improvements were recognised by the inspection report of 1999, which commented on ‘the very strong, well-qualified team of teachers and technicians working with enthusiastic, highly motivated girls.’.
