Wellbeing in Focus: Puppy Day Returns to Downe House

12 مايو 2025

At Downe House, we recognise that the lead-up to examinations can be a challenging and emotionally demanding time for our students. In response, our recent Puppy Day provided a joyful and soothing pause in the term – a reminder of the importance of emotional wellbeing, especially during periods of pressure.

Part of our wider Finding Balance programme, Puppy Day allowed students to take a step away from their revision to spend time with visiting therapy dogs. The simple act of stroking a dog, sharing a cuddle, or even just watching their playful antics brought genuine smiles and moments of calm to everyone involved.

“It is perfectly normal to feel a level of stress before and during exams,” explains Mrs Llewellyn, “but some of that stress can be significantly reduced through activities that calm the body and mind. Puppy Day was one such opportunity – an emotional ‘reset’ for our girls during a busy period.”

This initiative is one of many in our wellbeing offering, which is embedded into daily life at Downe House. From yoga and mindful breathing to creative pursuits and time in nature, our Finding Balance sessions give students a personalised wellbeing toolkit to draw upon – not just during exams, but throughout their lives.

The boarding environment further strengthens this ethos. With friends and staff close by, our students benefit from shared experiences, peer support and tailored pastoral care, particularly in the evenings and weekends. Being surrounded by others who understand the same pressures offers both comfort and community.

Our co-curricular and wellbeing provision encourages students to reflect on what helps them feel grounded, calm and connected. Puppy Day, now a much-loved tradition in our calendar, is a perfect example of how small moments of joy can have a lasting impact.

Exams may come and go, but learning how to care for oneself – and recognising when to pause and recharge – is a lesson that will last a lifetime.
