This time, Katie explores how our wider community helps us become the athlete we are today. 

More Than the Score: The Stories Behind Our Success 

This week has been one of those rare and special ones in school sport where everything aligns, not just because of the results themselves but because of the culture, commitment and characters behind the successes.  

Across every pitch, court, pool and performance space, I have seen something far more powerful than a scoreline. I saw girls pushing themselves, backing each other, stepping outside their comfort zones, and embracing the challenges in front of them. These are qualities we often speak about, but this week they were lived out in many ways.  

At Downe House, we often talk about striving for excellence, representing something greater than ourselves, and developing good people through sport. But this week has reminded me, more than ever, that our sporting culture isn’t built on outcomes, it’s built on people; players, coaches, parents, house-teams, tutors, and our wider community. 

It’s built on the athlete who keeps turning up to the early morning sessions, even in the dead of winter. On the girls who fought their way back from disappointment last year and earned their moment this week, on the captain who always leads with integrity, on the teammate who lifts spirits when things there tight, on the injured player who supported from the sidelines with just as much pride as if she were playing. These are the stories that matter and the stories that shape the culture we’re so proud of. 

And in the midst of all that, it has also been a week of truly fantastic achievements. I want to say a massive congratulations to every single girl and every team who has earned success, recognition, or secured breakthrough, history making moments. These achievements don’t happen by chance. They are the result of the bigger‑picture work: the planning, the long‑term development pathways, the quality of teaching and the belief we place in our students. 

That’s exactly why this blog is called More Than the Score. Because the scoreline is just the final sentence, the real story is everything that led there.  

To every student who played, trained, supported, or led this week: thank you. You have shown what our community can do, and your individual stories are what make our sporting environment so special. 

Here’s to celebrating the successes, valuing the journeys, and continuing to show that here at Downe House, it will always be more than the score.
