Entrepreneurial girls set up new app
As part of the Young Enterprise Company Programme run at Downe House as a co-curricular enrichment activity for the Sixth Form, a group of girls are working on creating an online service with an app enabling people to create present wish lists which their friends and family can use to choose a gift that they can be sure is really wanted!
Lower Sixth girl, Alice reports on their progress so far, “Our student company is called BLUR and we came up with the idea of the app because we all agreed that it would be so much better to have an idea of what people actually want for their birthday instead of buying stuff that ends up in a cupboard. The beauty of the app is that you can list as many items as you want and so it will still be a surprise when you unwrap your gifts. The app will be accessible to anyone who owns an apple or android device.
In order to fund the development of the app, we have designed and created a range of handmade necklaces which have been selling well alongside a series of sweet sales. As part of the Young Enterprise Programme, we have worked on writing a business plan which will help us to set out our proposition and identify our market, customers and competitors as well as the financial plan to underpin the business.”
The entrepreneurial spirit is alive and kicking at Downe House with over 40 girls involved in four Young Enterprise Companies this year. Young Enterprise Co-ordinator, Mr Alexis Pavlou said, “The girls have made excellent progress with their companies so far and I am pleased with the way that they have embraced the many concepts involved in a business plan from researching and designing products to managing their finances. We will be supporting the BLUR team every step of the way and are very excited to see how their business develops.”
Young Enterprise is the UK’s leading enterprise and financial education charity reaching over 250,000 young people every year. The Company scheme aims to help young people make the connection between school and the world of work, enabling them to develop the knowledge and attitudes they need to succeed in business.
