We are hugely proud of our pupils who are celebrating an impressively strong set of GCSE results today.
This talented and enthusiastic group of girls is to be congratulated for their academic achievements and, just as importantly, for their contributions to wider school life – in sport, creative and performing arts, co-curricular activities and representing their Houses. We are delighted for all our pupils for whom commitment to their studies, along with the support and encouragement of their teachers and families, has been rewarded.
This year, 81% of passes were graded 9-7 (the equivalent of A* or A), with 41% of passes at grade 9.
These percentages are expected to rise as re-marks and adjustments are made, and a complete overview of all our results will be published on our website by early October.
In addition to success in the core subjects, we are delighted to have seen impressive results across the curriculum.
Notable results were achieved in English, with 54% of girls awarded the highest possible grade. In Maths, 59% of grades achieved were 8 or 9 (the equivalent of an A*). Results across Science subjects were excellent, with 65% of grades at 8 or 9 (with 48% at grade 9 in Biology). Combining our Modern Foreign Languages (French, German, Italian, Chinese and Russian), 92% of girls achieved grades 9 to 7, with 56% scoring the top grade in French. Our Art and Design Department enjoyed another year of success with 100% of Textile grades, 93% of Art grades and 75% of 3D Design grades at 9 to 7.
The girls are now set to thrive in our vibrant Sixth Form, where they will be joined at the start of term by a significant number of new students who have chosen Downe House for their A Level studies.
Headmistress, Emma McKendrick says: “I am really thrilled for our Year 11 students, they have worked with focus, commitment and dedication over the last few years, and that is reflected in the excellent results they have achieved today. Many of our girls have been awarded top grades and now have a range of exciting opportunities and potential pathways at their feet. We are looking forward to supporting them as they take the next step in their educational journey.”
For families who are interested in a world-class independent education for their daughter, Downe House has an Open Evening for Day Pupils coming up soon – Monday 6 October.
