A grounding in fundamental skills
In the Lower School, the year groups consist of three or four mixed-ability teaching groups, with French and Mathematics (and Lower Fourth Latin) being taught in divisions based initially on previous teaching. All subjects are compulsory with optional extra subjects which are taken during prep time.

Academic enrichment from the beginning
Through tailored lectures for the Lower School, we aim to inspire our younger pupils to develop a love of learning outside the classroom and to widen their knowledge of the world and current affairs.
We also encourage our girls to enjoy a range of experiences and opportunities, including the vast array of co-curricular clubs and activities we offer. As the newest girls to the school, we understand the need to provide a chance in the classroom and beyond for our students to build strong friendships and find their own place in the vibrant and motivated Downe House community.
A highlight of Lower School is Exploring Europe
Exploring Europe is an exciting programme of overseas trips and cross-curricular learning for all pupils in our Lower School, designed to be the introductory stage of the unique Global Education Programme offered at Downe House. Girls visit four diverse European countries over four terms, whilst gaining a comprehensive understanding of each place through a bespoke curriculum, and developing important skills, leadership qualities and new perspectives.
