Discovery at Downe House’s First Clubs and Societies Fair

On Wednesday 17 September, the Murray Centre came alive for Downe House’s very first Clubs and Societies Fair. What began as an idea to showcase the variety of activities on offer quickly turned into a lively celebration of all that makes our co-curricular life so special.

From morning break onwards, the space was full of energy. Stalls were bright and busy, with staff and pupils working side by side to share information, answer questions and encourage anyone passing by to get involved. By lunchtime, the room was buzzing as girls explored displays, discovered new opportunities and filled sign-up sheets with their names.

The fair showed just how much there is to try at Downe House—whether it’s a debating society, a creative arts group, a sports club or a service project. There really was something for everyone.

Here’s what a few of our students had to say:

It was really fun to find out about all the clubs and societies at school, many of which I never knew existed until I was introduced to them at the fair!

Anna, Upper Sixth

I loved being able to talk about Model UN with all of the new students who were eligible to join and I look forward to meeting all the new members who will be joining us soon.

Felicity, Upper Sixth

All of the stands were really inspiring and it helped me to understand each subject on a deeper level.

Cindy, Lower Fifth

And a special word from Miss Prentice of the Roots Club, who summed up the spirit of the day perfectly:

It was such a pleasure and privilege to share the Murray Centre with so many other Clubs and Societies! Far from feeling competitive, I ended up signing up to a few myself! It was the most wonderful atmosphere, to see so many students curious and eager to discover and join new clubs. I had wonderful conversations with students from across every section, as well as members of staff, and even a visiting grandmother of a prospective student! These were precious moments that would not have been possible without the vision and organisation behind this event. I am already planning next year’s stall—I hope to see you there!

The day was a real reminder of how much enthusiasm and creativity there is within our school community. Judging by the sign-up sheets—and the smiles—it’s safe to say this first fair won’t be the last.
