A typical day

“There are so many good things about Downe House, far too many to mention.”
Louisa Henry

Not surprisingly, there is no such thing as a typical day at Downe House. That is because each girl is encouraged to express her individuality by pursuing her personal goals, ambitions and interests.

The common themes of challenge and activity, however, play an important role in every school day.

After catching up with friends over breakfast, girls attend assembly or morning service in our Christian chapel.

Lessons begin at 9am, when every girl benefits from an individual timetable created around her choice of subjects and supported by teaching styles designed to make her feel comfortable in the classroom and inspired to learn.

The school day is divided into eleven teaching periods, with prep slots for independent work, breaks in the morning and for lunch and tea.

Academic learning concludes at 6pm and, following supper, there is the opportunity for social time or to take part in a considerable choice of extra-curricular activities.

As evenings are also a time to relax, catch up on work and prepare for the next day, housemistresses are on hand to chat, listen, provide ample supplies of toast and hot chocolate, and to help everyone unwind.
