Lower School Romania International Link May 2007

Romania Link

In May 2007 two girls from the Removes, Amelia Tudhope and Georgina Kirk, spent the half-term week braving the delights of Bucharest, the capital of Romania with Miss Kaur and Mr Scott. This was the first visit by any girls as part of our international links program. Our girls met and worked with a small group of pupils from Scoala No 85 in Sector 2 of Bucharest.

Georgina and Amelia worked with our Romanian friends studying local traditional features of Romanian life – many of which have begun to reappear in the capital since the fall of the Soviet Empire. The girls looked at then local Spring Festival called Martisor in which people make small hand-made gifts for family and friends. Naturally, all the children loved making gifts for each other of small bracelets and sweets.

Romania

For one evening the girls joined their Romanian friends at a local children's opera – more humour than they expected from opera. The children then spent an hour together in the park.

The Romanian children and staff, Amelia, Georgina and Downe House staff spent a fascinating morning in the British Embassy having a ‘behind the scenes' tour and meeting with the Ambassador. It was also most rewarding to meet the ambassador during our lunch break in the local McDonalds.

Georgina and Amelia were wonderful ambassadors for themselves, the Lower School and Downe House. We have an excellent link as a result of their hard work through the year with Miss Kaur. The girls in the Lower School are now working on continuing the link and repeating the success this year.
