Miranda Hart wins Best Drama Performance for Call the Midwife

Probably more widely known as a comedian but at last night's National Television Awards Miranda Hart was recognised as a serious actress, winning female Best Drama Performance for her role as Chummy in BBC1 period drama Call the Midwife. Hart beat off stiff competition from Doctor Who's Karen Gillian, Scott and Bailey star Suranne Jones and Sheridan Smith, who played the eponymous Mrs Biggs in the ITV drama. This award follows her success at the 2012 TV Choice Awards where she also won the Best Actress trophy.

Miranda was filming in Australia and unable to attend the ceremony but the following message was delivered to the audience: "I am properly thrilled and very grateful to eveyone who voted. Call the Midwife is an ensemble show so this goes to all the cast members. Please give my award for safe keeping to Gary Barlow who, since snogging me on my show, has been totally smitten and is going to take me as a lover. Now I must get back to Hugh Jackman, who saw me on Bondi Beach and seems quite keen."
