Downe House Scholarship Information

Academic Awards

The Olive Willis Under 14 Scholarships, Under 13 Downe House Scholarships and Under 12 Downe House Scholarships are awarded on the results of examinations and interviews with the Headmistress, Director of Studies and appropriate Heads of Department, and are held each year in January. In addition to Scholarships, Exhibitions may also be awarded in each age group. Further Minor Awards for excellence in specific fields may be made if candidates of sufficient merit present themselves.

Awards (Scholarships and Exhibitions) are also available for entry to the Sixth Form. For further details see below.

The Value of the Awards

All Academic Scholarships and Exhibitions are an honour, carrying a nominal remission in fees of £1,000 per annum for Scholars and £600 for Exhibitioners.

Candidates who are successful in gaining an award, but require a greater remission in fees in order to take up their place may apply for an academic means tested bursary. Forms are available from the Registrar or Bursar and should be returned to the Bursar.

Duties of an Academic Award Holder

An Academic Award is held subject to a girl maintaining a reasonable standard of endeavour and conduct during her time at the school. There are no particular further duties for an academic scholar, although she will be expected to set an example in the way in which she approaches her studies.

Eligibility and Procedures

Age of entry will normally be in line with general entry i.e. 11 +, 12 +, 13 + and Sixth Form (16+). Candidates must be under 12, under 13 or under 14 on the 1st September following the examination. Girls sitting for entry to the Sixth Form must be in the final year of their GCSE studies or equivalent.

All the papers set for the various Scholarship examinations need no special preparation. In the case of the U12, U13 and U14 Awards, the content of the papers will be in line with the Common Entrance. The papers sat by Sixth Form candidates will be based on GCSE syllabuses.

The questions are devised to test ability and potential rather than achievements alone, and differences in the syllabuses which candidates have followed will be taken into account.

Sixth Form candidates will sit the examination papers at Downe House in November. In addition they will be interviewed by the Headmistress, Director of Studies, the Head of Sixth Form and appropriate Heads of Department.

U12, U13 and U14 candidates will sit the examination papers at their own school.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend Downe House where they will be interviewed by the Headmistress, Director of Studies and appropriate Heads of Department.

Heads of the schools are asked to write reports on their candidate's academic ability and progress and personal qualities, which will be given careful consideration.

There is no examination fee. Girls who are not already entered for the school will be required to register before sitting for an Award.
