The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme

To further develop their leadership, planning and team-building skills – and to gain a true sense of service and independence – many Downe House girls complete The Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels.

We believe that the ‘D of E’ Award provides an excellent character-building framework – one that includes taking part in a physical recreational activity, learning a skill, serving the community and completing a self-sufficient expedition.

The Community Service aspect of the award provides a wonderful opportunity to give something back locally.

Voluntary work undertaken by Downe House girls has included: entertaining the elderly, assisting with disabled riding, helping at Scouts, local nurseries and primary schools, as well as helping pupils with special needs.

Some girls have taken part in environmental projects and others have worked with the Police and Fire Brigades and have learnt to become future Lifesavers or First Aiders.

In addition to helping in the local community, we have also established strong international links, providing girls with additional opportunities for voluntary work.
