Charitable Status
 

Downe House was not originally established as a charitable foundation and has no major endowments for charitable purposes, but it has acquired charitable status in more recent years as a natural consequence of its work in fulfilling its fundamental purpose of providing an excellent all-round education.

The School's general charitable objective is stated as being to: ‘promote and provide for the advancement of education’, and a broad approach is taken to achieving this goal; not only in terms of outstanding examination results, but also by encouraging those in our care to think about the needs of others through wider engagement with the community and raising money for worthwhile causes.

In return, the School receives no public funding in support of its activities, but saves money by educating pupils for whom provision would otherwise have to be made by the state. Downe House is a significant local employer and tries, wherever possible, to source goods and services locally.
